Structure of the Governing Body

John Young - Chair of GovernorsJohn Young

I have been a governor at Hilltop Infant school for 17 years. For the first 5 years I was a parent governor, the period my own two boys attended this school. This is a remarkable, progressive school with fantastic children’s output due to the ability and dedication of the management, teaching and support staff. I am proud to be associated with the school in the capacity of a governor. I have been chair of governors for the last two years and will always try to make sure the school achieves the best it can for its pupils and employees.

Outside of school I have had a career in sales and sales management for major national companies. I am acting as Finance Officer for a charity.

My interests are music, playing drums and enjoying family life.

Chris Beauchamp - GovernorMr Chris Beauchamp

I was co-opted onto the Hilltop Infant School Governing Body in 2000 and at the beginning of 2006 became a Local Authority sponsored governor.  I live locally and both my children attended the Hilltop schools.  In September 2009 the next generation joined a reception class so I continue to have a live interest in maintaining Hilltop as the best infant school in the area.  I trained as an accountant and worked as a financial auditor in central government.  I also have wide experience in recruitment, performance management and premises.

Maggie Beauchamp - Governor Mrs Maggie Beauchamp

I have been a governor at Hilltop Infant School for 21 years and for 13 years of these I worked at the school as Finance Officer.  While my children were at school I was a parent governor, then I became a non-teaching governor and currently I am a community governor.  I have two BTEC qualifications in the subject of school governance and am also vice Chair of Governors at Beauchamps High School.  Over the past 17 years I have had the pleasure and privilege of seeing many of the Hilltop infants develop into responsible and confident adults.

During my time at Hilltop Infant School I have worked with three headteachers and, together with the staff and governors, everyone has worked tirelessly to provide the best education and care for all pupils at the school.  My main aim as a governor is to see this work continue so as to provide every child with new challenges and to stimulate a desire for life-long learning.

Mr Terry Bigland - Governor

Emma Davis - Governor

My name is Emma Davis and I have been a parent governor at Hilltop since September 2014.

I also work part time at an investment bank at Canary Wharf.

I have 3 children. The eldest who is at Hilltop Junior school in Yr.4, my 2nd child is currently in Yr.1 at Hilltop infants, and the youngest who is 1, and I would hope will be going to Hilltop in the future.

I am very much looking forward to being part of the exciting times that are ahead of Hilltop Infants.

Rosemarie Lunn - Vice Chair GovernorsMrs Rosemarie Lunn

I have been a governor at Hilltop Infant School since 2000.  At first I was co-opted onto the governing body because of my professional background in school librarianship and the curriculum; and now I am a Local Authority appointed governor.  I have always enjoyed working with children and young people and find being a governor a very rewarding role as it means that I can give something back to the community. Indeed, I spent the last 10 years of my working life actively involved in recruiting, informing and training governors in Essex as part of the Governor Services team.

I enjoy reading, cooking and gardening in my spare time; and love spending time with my family both here and abroad.

Karen Mackenzie - Headteacher GovernorMrs Karen Mackenzie

I started work as a teacher in 1982 and worked at two Essex schools before taking a break to spend time with my family. I have four children, two girls and two boys; my daughters and elder son are now in full-time employment and my younger son is at university. I became the Headteacher at Hilltop Infant School in September 2006 after leaving a Rayleigh school where I had been the deputy head.

Over the past twenty five years I have worked on five different primary and secondary governing bodies as a teacher governor, parent governor, foundation governor and now as headteacher.

I am proud to part of the Hilltop Infant School Governing Body, where committed staff and volunteers work together to ensure that children are at the heart of all we do. Our Governors strive to provide the best possible education for all of our pupils.

Samantha O’Connorsam-o-connor - Governor

I am a full time mum of two little people, my son is in reception year here at Hilltop and I hope his sister will follow him next year.

I gained my degree from Leicester University in Business back in 1994 and have worked, in the past, my way up to the role of Head of Business Development for a large insurance company based in the city.

I enjoy reading when I get some quiet time, music has played a large part in my life, playing in bands and orchestras and now I am a Lego master builder, an expert on anything ‘Frozen’ and a rookie costume maker for World Book Day.

Having been through the education system and worked in various environments I understand the importance of education and the fact that it is the cornerstone to the rest of a person’s life.

Children, I believe, at this age are very vulnerable and need nurturing to learn not only educationally but also from a social perspective. Social skills can be extremely difficult to understand and often confusing.

I am passionate that children at such a young age need to be caught up in the wonders of learning so that they can go on to be the best that they can be regardless of what they choose to be.

Jenny Ready - Staff Governor

Hi, I'm Jenny Ready and I've been a teacher at Hilltop for 12 years. I have 2 children of my own, age 7 and 4, so working as half of a job-share enables me to split myself between being a teacher and mum!
I'm also a staff governor and enjoy working with a great team to support the children and the school.

Alex Segger -  Governor

Paul Strange - GovernorPaul Strange

I became a governor at Hilltop Infant School in 2011 as I wanted to give something back to a school that gave me so much as a pupil and has since done the same for my eldest son.

Hilltop Infant School is a very special school with dedicated and nurturing staff and I am proud to be a governor here. There is always something new to learn as a governor and I look forward to using these skills along with those I have developed through work, life and my own education to ensure Hilltop continues to thrive for future generations.

Christina Walter - Staff GovernorChristina Walter

Hi my name is Christina Walter and I am a member of staff here at Hilltop Infants. I started working as a classroom assistant in 2005. I am now a fulltime HLTA and Forest School leader.

I love spending time outdoors both at school and when at home. You can often find me at the stables taking care of "Dave" my horse (well my daughters, but it is good to share).

I love working at Hilltop Infant School and being part of the governing body and I feel that we are one big team. We are always looking for new and exciting ways to enhance the children's learning and believe in a child centred approach.
